DescriptionNot many towns can claim that they were founded to serve as a necropolis, a city of the dead—but such is the case with Colma. When San Francisco leaders determined in the late 19th century that land was too valuable to be used for burials, hundreds of thousands of graves were moved to what became known as the “city of souls.” Graveyards, in fact, take up approximately three-quarters of Colma's land area.
Among the notable individuals interred in Colma cemeteries are baseball great Joe DiMaggio, whose grave is in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery; gunfighter Wyatt Earp, buried next to third wife Josephine in Hills of Eternity Memorial Park; and Joshua A. Norton, the self-proclaimed, late 19th-century “Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico,” laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
