Columbia Falls was established around 1780 on the banks of the Pleasant River, which the Downeast Salmon Federation stocks with Atlantic salmon each year. The town's early successes in lumbering and shipbuilding resulted in the construction of elegant homes for its prominent businessmen; a number of these structures still stand. Over time the town began to focus on agricultural pursuits, and today the blueberry industry is one of the primary drivers of the local economy.
