DescriptionGold miners settled Cooke City in the early 1870s, and by 1880 the town numbered 7,000 fortune-seeking souls. Gold mining continued until the late 1950s, when commercial mining finally ceased. Gold panning in area streams remains popular.
Cooke City is 4 miles from Yellowstone National Park's northeast gate. Beartooth Scenic Highway, the town's eastern access, usually is open Memorial Day through mid-Oct. Cooke City can be reached all year via the road from Gardiner through Yellowstone.
