DescriptionIn a valley laced with numerous springs and surrounded by high bluffs, Coon Valley lies in a landscape forever captured in the books of Hamlin Garland, who grew up on a farm in nearby West Salem. Reminiscent of the valleys of Norway, the ravines in the Coon Valley area attracted Norwegian and Bohemian immigrants beginning in 1849.
The hills around the village are among the highest along US 14/61. Between the bluffs are tobacco and dairy farms run by descendants of the village's original settlers.
