Description
Among the mesas and open expanses of land in the Four Corners region, Cortez has been a trading center for more than 2,000 years. Ranching, tourism and light manufacturing support today's economy.
Ten miles east on US 160 is the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. Hovenweep National Monument is about 48 miles west. Take a birding field trip to Mesa Verde National Park or the Ute Tribal Park in early May during the Ute Mountain Mesa Verde Birding Festival, which also features lectures and an art show.
Native American dances and an outdoor drama are performed at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St., throughout the summer; phone (970) 565-1151.
