Originally a summer retreat for New Yorkers, the rural village of Cos Cob developed into an art colony in the late 19th century. The residence of art teacher John Twachtman and the Bush-Holley house became gathering places for artsy types. The town's name is said to come for the Algonquin word cassacubque, meaning “high rocks.”
