DescriptionFreshwater springs enticed Montana-bound gold prospectors to camp here in the 1860s. Homesteading started around 1880, and a town, first called Cottonwood Springs, developed as the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line across the coulee scablands. Davenport remains an important trading center for the surrounding wheat farms.
