Deer Island is at the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay, 10 kilometres (6 mi.) by water from St. Andrews. It can be reached by automobile ferry from the mainland south of St. George at Letete, and during the summer from Eastport, Maine. The ferry also runs to Campobello Island July through August.
There are beaches and short walking trails at Deer Island Point Park. An enormous whirlpool, Old Sow, can be observed offshore approximately 3 hours prior to high tide. Currents rushing through the Western Passage between Deer Island Point and Dog Island create this whirling vortex, the Western Hemisphere's largest. The name is a reference to the smaller “piglet” whirlpools that spin off the main whirlpool.
Access to the best on-land lookout vantage point is from the Deer Island Campground at Deer Island Point Park, near the ferry landing at the south end of the island. Check with the office before entering; phone (506) 747-2423.
