DescriptionForested countryside and a plentiful population of whitetail deer prompted late 19th-century railroad workers to describe the area north of Spokane as a “deer park.” New Yorker William Hopkins Short settled here in 1889, establishing a sawmill to supply lumber to the railroad, and the community of Deer Park was incorporated in 1908. Lakes in the vicinity offer opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating.
