DescriptionOn July 19, 1861, Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson marched the new recruits of Virginia's First Brigade toward Delaplane, then known as Piedmont Station. Some 10,000 soldiers boarded freight and cattle cars to reach the first major battle of the Civil War, First Manassas. The use of the railroad for large-scale troop movement marked a new era in military transport. The battle 2 days later was a decisive victory for the South.
