First inhabited by Paugassett and Pootatuck Indians, the Derby area was settled by fur traders in 1642. The town's location at the confluence of the Housatonic and Naugatuck rivers made it a center for water-powered manufacturing; Derby's first gristmill was built in 1681. Covering just 5.3 square miles, diminutive Derby bills itself as “Connecticut's smallest city.”
