DescriptionOn the eastern shore of Puget Sound, Des Moines was settled in 1867. The city was named for the Des Moines City Improvement Co. and prospered as a major sawmill center in the late 1800s.
The Des Moines Marina, west of SR 509 at 22307 Dock Ave. S., has a 670-foot public fishing pier. Guest moorage, boat launch facilities and gasoline are available; phone (206) 824-5700. Two miles south of downtown on Marine View Dr. S. is popular Saltwater State Park. Encompassing a 1,400-foot-long beach and a deep, forested ravine, it offers opportunities for bird-watching, camping, picnicking, hiking, windsurfing and scuba diving; phone (253) 661-4956.
