Dunn Center, named for its central location in Dunn County, is near the Killdeer Mountains, which rise 600 feet above the surrounding prairie. The name is derived not from the same-named species of bird but from the Native American name for the hills, Tah-kah-o-kuty, which means “the place where they kill the deer.”
