DescriptionWhat is claimed to be the world's oldest church bell tolls from the tower of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Cast for a Spanish monastery in A.D. 815, the bell was salvaged after Napoleon's troops destroyed the monastery.
The bell arrived in New York on a 19th-century trading vessel as part of a shipload of metal. In 1834 William Pratt, a local resident and ships chandler, claimed the bell and shipped it to East Haddam. Also at St. Stephen's is the small schoolhouse where Nathan Hale taught 1773-74.
Goodspeed Musicals offers nationally acclaimed productions April through December in the 1876 Victorian Goodspeed Opera House, which overlooks the Connecticut River; phone (860) 873-8668 for tickets and information.
