Description
Ironworks were established at the mouth of Lake Saltonstall in 1657, and the town of East Haven was incorporated in 1785. A number of buildings have survived, including the Old Stone Church, circa 1774, and a green where Marquis de Lafayette is said to have camped. The Old Cemetery, in use since 1707, contains the grave of native son John Winthrop, Yale University's first student, who graduated in 1704.
