Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, Edinburg was founded by German and Swiss immigrants in the late 18th century. The fertile region became known as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy” during the Civil War. After his soldiers destroyed barns, livestock and crops across the valley in 1864, Union general Philip Sheridan boasted that the Shenandoah was so bare, “a crow would be well advised to take its own provisions.”
