DescriptionIn the late 1800s Elk City was a rest stop for cattlemen driving herds along the Great Western Trail from Texas to Kansas. Oil was discovered in 1947, and the “black gold” flowed until reserves were depleted in the late 1960s. Interests then turned to deep gas exploration in Elk City and the surrounding Anadarko Basin. The town is on historic Route 66.
The quarter horse, which is notable as both a racehorse and the cowboy's mount of choice, is raised in and around Elk City. The breed almost disappeared with the cowboy era but was reintroduced in the 1940s.
