The French settlement of Port Dauphin was to have been the capital of Cape Breton Island (Île Royale), but instead Louisbourg was selected as the seat of government in 1718. After the fall of Louisburg 40 years later, many British soldiers settled in the area, and Port Dauphin was renamed Englishtown.
