DescriptionErwin is near the Nolichucky River in the northeast portion of the Cherokee National Forest. The northern end of the Nolichucky Gorge, about 250 feet wide, borders the river for about 10 miles.
Until the 1950s a local pottery plant produced about 30,000 pieces of painted and underglazed pottery a day. Some of this pottery and other items of local interest are among the historical displays at the Unicoi County Heritage Museum, phone (423) 743-9449, on the grounds of the Erwin National Fish Hatchery.
Downtown Erwin is the site of the Unicoi County Apple Festival in early October, featuring handmade crafts, antiques, live music, a Blue Ridge Pottery show and sale, children's activities and a smorgasbord of food.
