Founded as a shipbuilding center, Essex is home to the fishing schooner Evelina M. Goulart, one of some 4,000 schooners built in the area. In 1990, the vessel was donated to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

A number of antique dealers are clustered near the intersections of Main Street (SR 133) and Southern Avenue and Main and Martin streets. Of the 30 or so showrooms, one of the most dramatic is Alexander Westerhoff Antiques (18 Eastern Ave.), which is located in a former Episcopal church built in the early 1800s. Housed in a 19th-century carriage barn, All Prints and Maps (34 Main St.) specializes in 16th- through 19th-century maps and decorative engravings. The shopping district also shelters art galleries; custom furniture and home decor stores; and gift boutiques that sell handcrafted stationery, jewelry and pottery.
