DescriptionOriginally founded in 1896 as a colony for aging Union soldiers fleeing Midwestern droughts and frigid Northern winters, Fitzgerald features a historic downtown laid out in a perfect grid. Evidence of the city’s Civil War heritage and early spirit of compromise can be seen in the street names here: seven are named for Confederate generals and seven for Union generals.
