John Clemens moved from Tennessee to the new village of Florida in 1835, where he became a partner in an in-law's store and set up a law practice. His son, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born here and later, as Mark Twain, created some of America's early classic literature. Four years after Twain's birth the family moved to Hannibal, which served as the model for St. Petersburg, the fictional home of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.
