DescriptionIn Florissant you'll find houses typical of those built by the French settlers who settled the fleurissant, or “flowering,” valley in 1786. The Taille de Noyer House, 1 Taille de Noyer Dr., is reached via a driveway on the McCluer High School campus at 1896 S. Florissant Rd. It is believed to be one of the oldest residences in St. Louis County. Prior to a series of expansions and renovations, the 23-room mansion was a simple cabin first used as a fur-trading post in 1790.
Old St. Ferdinand's Shrine, at St. Francois and St. Charles streets, is the oldest Catholic church between the Mississippi River and the Rockies. It is an excellent example of the Federal architectural style applied to a brick building. A convent and historical museum containing religious accouterments adjoin the 1820 church.
