DescriptionFrom the age of 10, legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant grew up in Fordyce. In 1927, when Bryant was 13 or 14, a promoter at the Fordyce Theatre offered a dollar to anyone who would wrestle a bear—Bryant took him up on the offer, thereby earning his nickname. The mainstays of the local economy are logging and wood products.
There are 18 Craftsman-style houses in the Charlotte Street Historic District of Fordyce, some designed by Charles Thompson in the early 1900s. The First Presbyterian Church on West 4th Street has 36 stained-glass windows.
