DescriptionAlongside the Erie Canal in Fort Hunter is Schoharie Crossing, a 3-mile nature trail with interpretive signage and picnic facilities.
Vestiges of the original Erie Canal locks, as well as structures from two other phases of canal construction, can be seen at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Schoharie Street. The site preserves the six remaining arches from the Schoharie Aqueduct, built in 1842 to carry the Erie Canal over Schoharie Creek, as well as a restored 1850 canal store. A visitor center is open Wed.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1-5 Memorial Day-Oct. 31. The site also offers nature and bike trails and a boat launch; phone (518) 829-7516.
