Fort Leonard Wood, in the Ozark foothills 2 miles south of I-44 from the Fort Leonard Wood exit, is a major U.S. Army training center and headquarters of the Army Engineer, Military Police and Chemical Corp. schools. Established in 1940, the fort is named for the general who helped organize the 1st U.S. Cavalry, The Rough Riders.
