Initially a link in a strategic chain of 19th-century trading posts along the Mackenzie portage route to the Arctic, Fort Smith became an autonomous town in 1966. It is regional headquarters for the government of the Northwest Territories and contains several governmental offices. The town also is the site of the Thebacha Campus of Aurora College. Nearby Wood Buffalo National Park is home to one of the largest buffalo herds in the world.
