DescriptionLegend has it that the real name of the town was Fox Valley, but when submitted to the Post Office in 1825, illegible handwriting was read as “Fort” and so it has remained.
In 1875 a new peach variety, the Elberta, was introduced. The new peach and access to railroads made Fort Valley a peach-growing center in the Peach State. The area became so successful that a new county was formed—ultimately named Peach. The Georgia Peach Festival, home to what is purported to be the world's largest peach cobbler, is held in June; for information phone the festival office at (478) 825-4002.
