Fountain City, largely settled by Quakers, served as an important station of the Underground Railroad, the route covertly followed by thousands of fugitive slaves seeking freedom in Canada. At one time almost the entire community of 30 families was involved in Underground Railroad activities. They essentially were directed by Levi and Catharine Coffin, North Carolina Quakers after whom the characters Simeon and Rachel Halliday of “Uncle Tom's Cabin” were patterned.
