DescriptionPioneers on the way to Oregon in the 1840s and gold seekers trekking to California 1849-51 traveled down the North Platte Valley; Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock were landmarks to these early travelers. Visitors to Gering can see the original wagon ruts made by these pioneers. The Sublette Expedition, the first group to take wagons across the prairie to the Rockies, camped in the area on July 17, 1830.
South of Gering the grassy slopes of the Wildcat Range are punctuated by vertical cliffs and native flora and fauna. Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area is in this region, and the Western Trails Scenic Byway—the first designated byway in the state—follows US 26 and SR 92.
