DescriptionIn 1850 settler George Knight stubbed his toe on a piece of quartz laced with gold and put Grass Valley on the map. Aided by advanced mining techniques that first were developed and used in this region, Grass Valley ultimately became the richest gold-mining town in California. Unlike most gold rush towns, it survived the mining heyday; today high-tech manufacturing and tourism anchor the economy.
