DescriptionGuilford was settled by the Puritan congregation that followed Rev. Henry Whitfield from England in 1639. One Samuel Hill, a local citizen, ran for public office repeatedly in the mid-18th century; his perseverance gave rise to the popular expression “run like Sam Hill.” About 500 houses dating from the late 1630s to around 1875 have been preserved. The town shoreline offers several promontories with scenic water views.
