DescriptionWhen Rev. Eleazar Wheelock arrived in Hanover to establish the school that was to be an experiment in spreading Christian education to the Abenaki Indians and other youth, he found a staid agricultural village of about 20 families. The purpose of the school failed so Wheelock enlarged it to include a college for the education of whites in the classics, philosophy and literature. In 1769 and despite objections from Lord Dartmouth, the head of the British Board of Trustees, Wheelock named the school Dartmouth College. The community and the college quickly established a symbiotic relationship that continues to the present, each growing and prospering with the other.
