DescriptionOriginally called Mount Pleasant, Harlan was renamed in 1917 for Maj. Silas Harlan, a Kentuckian killed in 1782 in the Revolutionary War's Battle of Blue Lick.
Despite several serious clashes between labor and management during the first 3 decades of the 20th century, Harlan has developed into the coal-producing capital of Kentucky.
