DescriptionSince its early years as a steamboat and fishing town at the confluence of the Spoon and Illinois rivers, Havana has continued to grow and benefit from its riverside setting. For 26 years Abraham Lincoln visited the town in his various roles of surveyor, returning soldier, lawyer and senatorial candidate. Both Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas spoke on successive days in Havana’s Rockwell Park in final preparation for their famous series of debates in the 1858 senatorial campaign.
