At the base of 1,200-foot-high Poteau Mountain in the Ouachita Range, Heavener was carved out of land known to the Choctaws as the “Prairie of the Tall Grass.” It was named for Joseph Heavener, a local merchant and owner of the original townsite. The town lies along a scenic section of US 59/270 that runs 26 miles between Poteau and Page.
