DescriptionSettled in 1725 by German Palatines, Herkimer began as a dairying center, then became a focus of state politics and conventions during the early 1800s. In 1865 Warner Miller perfected the process of making paper from wood pulp, which cut the cost of newsprint and caused a huge increase in newspaper, magazine and book publishing.
A trial at the Herkimer County Courthouse inspired Theodore Dreiser's novel “An American Tragedy.” More recent local activities include digging for “Herkimer diamonds,” which are actually rare, exceptionally clear, double-terminated quartz crystals. An open-pit mine and the Herkimer Diamond Mines Museum are on SR 28; phone (315) 717-0175.
