DescriptionA legacy of fine 19th-century German immigrant craftsmanship is remembered at the Deutsche Schule, held in the German School of Arts and Crafts at 4th and Schiller streets. Basket makers, potters, quilters, weavers and leather crafters can all be seen at work. There are plenty of craft and antique shops in town.
Several traditional German festivals take place annually; one of the most popular is the Hermann Wurstfest, a showcase for sausage makers from around the state. In addition to sampling bratwurst, schwartenmagen and other fine sausages, festival activities include German music and dancing, a blacksmith demonstration and a Wiener Dog Derby. It takes place in late March.
The Deutschheim State Historic Site, 109 W. 2nd St., includes the Pommer-Gentner House and the Strehly House, both fine examples of German architectural heritage. Tours are given daily at 10, 12:30 and 2:30, Apr.-Oct.; Thurs.-Sun., rest of year. For additional information phone (573) 486-2200.
