DescriptionThe home of Tabor College, Hillsboro was settled mainly by German-speaking Mennonite immigrants from Russia and Poland. Arriving in the early 1870s, they are credited with bringing Turkey Red wheat to the area.
The Mennonite Settlement Museum includes an 1876 Mennonite house-barn and flour mill replica and an 1886 one-room schoolhouse. The owner of the 1909 William F. Schaeffler House Museum grew his grocery, opened in 1887, into the county's largest store by 1940. Guided tours of both museums are available by appointment; phone (620) 947-3775.
Nearby recreation areas include McPherson State Fishing Lake northwest of Hillsboro and Marion Reservoir to the northeast.
