Humptulips, a farming community above the Humptulips River, once served as the logging outlet for the largest stand of Douglas fir in the Northwest. The stand was so dense that loggers had little choice but to fell all timber in the same direction. The town's unusual name is derived from a Native American term meaning either “chilly region” or “hard to pole,” a reference to the river.
