Hyattville, which began as an isolated frontier cow town, is at the confluence of Medicine Lodge and Paint Rock creeks in a region that mixes rolling foothills with rugged canyons to create a series of caves, ledges and grassy knolls. The protective nature of this area is what lured its first inhabitants in prehistoric times.
Artifacts of early Paleo-Indian family groups were preserved in the layers of sediment beneath a sandstone cliff containing myriad petroglyphs and pictographs. Some of these can be seen at Medicine Lodge State Archeological Site, 6 miles northeast of town off SR 31 on Cold Springs Road; phone (307) 469-2234.
