DescriptionColonists from Jamestown established the Isle of Wight Plantation on the James River in 1619. Some of its original settlers may have come from the English island of the same name. Villagers traded peacefully with the Worrosquoyacke and Nottoway Indians until 1622, when the Powhatan Confederacy launched a series of attacks against dozens of James River settlements. Nearly a third of all Virginia colonists were killed; most local tribes were driven from their lands in reprisal.
