Description
A township at the northern fringes of the Pine Barrens, Jackson has several campgrounds and parks. The New Jersey Forest Nursery is off CR 527-528. Prospertown Lake, a wildlife management area west on CR 537, offers fishing and hunting. Canoeing is available on the Upper Toms River.
In nearby Lakewood, the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum of Georgian Court University, 900 Lakewood Ave., features formal gardens, impressive sculptures and fountains; phone (732) 364-2200. A 50-room Georgian-style mansion that was once the winter home of George Jay Gould, the son of a 19th-century railroad tycoon, also is on the premises but is not open to the public.
