Founded in 1813, Jefferson was named in honor of the third president of the United States and was part of the area of Ohio known as the Western Reserve, a colony of Connecticut. The community experienced a burst of prosperity in the 1870s during the era of the railroad steam engine. Today Jefferson is the county seat for Ashtabula County.
