Description
In 1670-71 a French and First Nations village was founded at La Prairie by French Jesuits. The native population moved farther up the St. Lawrence beginning in 1676 and finally established a settlement in Kahnawake, meaning “by the rapids,” in 1716. The village served as a refuge for Iroquois converts to Christianity. The reservation has no street names or numbers.
