DescriptionNamed for a prized shorthorn bull, Kalona was settled in 1846. Today the community is considered the largest Amish Mennonite settlement west of the Mississippi River. The Amish cultivate much of the rich, rolling land around Kalona, which is popular for the traditional folkways and culture of this group.
