Once the site of an active limestone quarry, Kelleys Island in Lake Erie is a summer resort and the center of a grape-growing region. On the island's southern shore, just east of downtown, pictographs at Inscription Rock are visible from a viewing platform. It is estimated that the carvings representing animal and human figures are at least 400 years old. A roof has been built above the limestone rock to help protect it from further erosion.
A trip to Kelleys Island State Park affords access to much of the recreation and sightseeing opportunities offered on the island with its beach, trails, nature preserve and the Glacial Grooves site.
