Archeological evidence of the Pamunkey Indians in the area dates back 10,000 years. An English treaty signed by King Charles II in 1677 established articles of peace and a tribal territory that remains in existence today. The Pamunkey Indian Reservation encompasses some 1,200 acres in King William County.
