DescriptionDuring the 1870s Kinsley shared in the boom brought by railroad expansion. The Mercury newspaper printed 25,000 European editions advertising the town: “Kinsley—The Cynosure Of All Eyes, The Coming Great Metropolis.” But when the dust—most of which was caused by a decade of drought—had settled, an 1888 edition of the Mercury confessed that the boom was over as nine columns of delinquent tax notices were printed.
Today Kinsley enjoys quieter days as an agricultural center and the seat of Edwards County. The town is noted for being halfway between New York City and San Francisco—1,561 miles from either city—giving it the nickname Midway, U.S.A.
