Description
Kinston was founded in 1762 and originally named Kingston. After the Revolution, Patriots changed the spelling to avoid any reference to England. Today Kinston is one of the nation's leading bright-leaf tobacco markets. East of town on US 70 in Spindale, Lakeside Mills operates a 19th-century gristmill; phone (828) 286-4866. Founded in Kinston in 1981, the Eastern North Carolina Bluegrass Association is dedicated to increasing public awareness of bluegrass music and its heritage.
